The UK Home Office has eliminated more than 100 mid-skilled occupations from its Skilled Worker visa eligibility list, signaling a major shift in immigration policy. This decision is expected to have a significant impact on many Nigerian professionals currently in the UK, as well as those hoping to relocate under the same visa route.

According to Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, this move is part of a broader immigration reform aimed at restoring control and curbing record-high net migration. She described it as a “complete reset” of the immigration system. “These new measures strengthen our ability to reduce migration numbers and refocus efforts on developing talent within the UK,” she stated.
The affected roles—mostly classified at RQF levels 3–5—span various sectors, including hospitality, construction, and skilled trades, where many Nigerians have historically found employment. The new rules now require a minimum skill level of RQF Level 6 or higher.
Other significant policy changes include:
Closure of the Social Care Worker visa route to new international applicants due to concerns over exploitation.
Introduction of a Temporary Shortage List (TSL), which permits short-term migration for only select high-demand roles—many of which come with restrictions such as no dependants and fixed expiration dates.
Revised Immigration Salary List (ISL) reflecting higher wage thresholds.
Full review by the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) to reassess the TSL and determine future role eligibility.
These policy shifts may render many Nigerians ineligible for visa renewal unless they can secure new roles that meet the updated skill and salary benchmarks.
