Vincent Aboubakar of Cameroon wins Ethiopia 4-1 victory to qualify for the knockout stage.

Cameroon captain Vincent Aboubakar is leading in the highest goal scorer in the ongoing Afriacan Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2021 with four goals so far.

The captain scored two second half goals in the match between Ethiopia on Thursday 13 January. He had earlier scored two goals for Cameroon’s first match against Burkina Faso on Monday where the Idomitable Lions win 2-1.

Ethiopia started well in the first half with early goal at four minute but lost concentration immediately second half started.

Cameroon has become the first country to qualify to the next round after their victory against Ethiopia.

The two first met in 1970 in AFCON tournament, where Cameroon beat Ethiopia 3-2 and in 2016 Nations Cup where they played goalless.

The match took place in Olembe Stadium in Yaounde.

The later game, also in Group A, is the first-ever Afcon meeting between Cape Verde and Burkina Faso. Cape Verde can qualify for the last 16 with a win, while a win for the Stallions would put them in control of second place in the group.

Burkina Faso coach Kamou Malo is back with the team after missing the loss to Cameroon with Covid-19. “We will play with all our strength to win this match and go as far as possible,” he said before the game.

Cape Verde edged out Ethiopia in their opener but are planning a different approach, according to assistant manager Humberto Bettencourt. “We will play a different game than the first match to try to secure a place in the next round of competition.”
