In December, Italian prosecutors sought the maximum penalty of a four-year ban.
The 2018 World Cup champion had his positive test following Juventus’ match against Udinese on August 20, 2023, where he remained on the bench instead of playing.
Pogba, in a statement, announced his intention to appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, maintaining his innocence and denying the use of banned substances.
Refusing to engage in a plea bargain with Italy’s anti-doping organization, Pogba’s case was heard by the country’s anti-doping court. A source familiar with the matter confirmed the verdict to The Associated Press under anonymity, citing Italian privacy laws.
While the World Anti-Doping Code mandates a four-year ban, reductions are possible if an athlete proves the doping was unintentional, resulted from contamination, or provides “substantial assistance” to investigators.
At 30, Pogba returned to Juventus in 2022 after his second stint with Manchester United. However, he has faced limitations due to various ailments since returning to Italy. Between 2012 and 2016, he made 178 appearances for Juventus.
In 2022, he missed France’s World Cup final due to a knee injury.
