Lampard, whose interim tenure is now finished after just one win in 11 games, anticipated a major challenge for his replacement while acknowledging that standards at the club have fallen.
Pochettino has signed a deal with Chelsea and is set to be named the club’s next permanent manager in the near future, but Lampard believes the players’ level and attitude must improve dramatically for his appointment to be successful.
“I’m a big fan of Pochettino as a manager, and I think he’s a very good manager,” Lampard added. “However, it’s not about which individual it could be; it’s about finding the right high-level manager.”
“Pochettino’s history shows that he works at clubs of this caliber, and by allowing him to work with the players, he creates a strong identity in a team that can win more games.” Those things don’t always happen overnight, so we have to be cautious with our expectations.
“A lot of work needs to be done. That’s my six-week overview, the fundamentals I keep mentioning – standards are so important to our club right now. Standards have collectively fallen – I can be honest about that because it’s my last game and I may not see some of them again for a while!
