“I Felt More Jamaican Than Nigerian” – Burna Boy Opens Up About His Deep Connection to Jamaican Culture, Music, and Life in Brixton, UK.

Burna Boy, a Grammy-winning Nigerian musician born Damini Ogulu, has said that he used to identify as “more Jamaican.”

He explained that he became close to Jamaicans when studying in Brixton, UK, years ago, and developed a great affinity with the Caribbean country.

He claimed that his love for Jamaica was influenced by his childhood and exposure to Jamaican music.

“So I considered myself more Jamaican at the time because everyone around me was Jamaican or Caribbean. There were very few Nigerians around me at the time. When I return home to Nigeria, I am truly a Nigerian. But when I was here, I was Jamaican. Even the Africans who were my guys were not from Nigeria. They were from Gambia, Uganda, and Congo. There were just two Nigerians on my crew.

Burna Boy has previously stated in an interview that he considers Jamaica “home.”

He has stated that Jamaican reggae and dancehall have had a significant impact on his music.

Burna Boy dated British-Jamaican rapper Stefflon Don from 2019 to 2021.
