Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, a suspended lawmaker who represents Kogi Central on the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) platform, clashed with security personnel at the National Assembly complex yesterday while trying to return to her legislative duties. Because the senator refused to accept the seat that Senate President Godswill Akpabio had given her during plenary, the Senate leadership suspended her for six months. In court, she contested the action, arguing that the Senate had overreached itself in suspending her for six months and declaring her recall.
The fight between security agents and the senator and her supporters arose from the former’s attempts to prevent her from entering the main Senate building to resume her duties.
Akpoti-Uduaghan, supported by a swarm of supporters, defied MOPOL’s massive security barrier at the National Assembly gate.
The National Assembly complex and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation’s (SGF) office were reached through sealed gates.
After the senator’s car was prevented from entering the National Assembly complex, she parked it outside the Assembly’s grounds and proceeded through the main MOPOL gate with activists, including Aisha Yesufu. However, the security men stopped her after she managed to get past the first queue of guards.
However, the gate to the main building was firmly shut, making it impossible for the lawmaker and her entourage to enter.
The security officers informed them that they were carrying out directives from above.
As a result, security personnel locked off all areas, forcing drivers to turn around, leaving hundreds of National Assembly employees and guests trapped at the gates.
