Tyla Triumphs Over Ayra Starr and Asake to Win BET Awards.
South African singer Tyla was honored as Best New Artist at the 2024 BET Awards on July 1, held at the Peacock Theater in Downtown Los Angeles.
Tyla’s debut single, ‘Water,’ propelled her to international acclaim, earning her numerous awards, including the inaugural Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance in February 2024. At 22, she became the youngest African artist to win a Grammy.
In the early hours of Monday, Tyla accepted the Best New Artist award, surpassing fellow African artist Ayra Starr, along with 4Batz, Bossman Dlow, Fridayy, October London, and Sexyy Red.
During her acceptance speech, Tyla expressed her gratitude, saying, “This is such a gift to be here. I want to dedicate this one to Africa. I want to dedicate this to all the African superstars before me that didn’t get these opportunities that I’m getting. This is just amazing. Africa to the world guys.”
Additionally, Tyla won the award for Best International Act, defeating artists such as Asake, Ayra Starr, Aya Nakamura (France), and other international performers.
