“Unfrosted” is a 2024 American comedy film marking Jerry Seinfeld’s directorial debut. Seinfeld co-wrote the screenplay with his team, including Spike Feresten, Barry Marder, and Andy Robin. The ensemble cast features Seinfeld himself, alongside Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Max Greenfield, Hugh Grant, and Amy Schumer.
Loosely inspired by the true story behind the creation of Pop-Tarts toaster pastries, the film was produced by Seinfeld, Feresten, and Beau Bauman through their production company, Columbus 81 Productions. Distributed by Netflix, “Unfrosted” premiered in the United States on May 4, 2024.
PLOT
In “Unfrosted,” the plot revolves around a young runaway who encounters Bob Cabana, a character who offers to share the true origin story of a beloved American breakfast food: Pop-Tarts.
Set in 1963, Bob Cabana is a key figure at Kellogg’s corporation in Battle Creek, Michigan. When he senses a looming threat from rival company Post, Bob embarks on a mission to uncover their latest creation, a fruit-based pastry with addictive properties.
Discovering that Post has rehired his former colleague Stan from NASA to develop this product, Bob persuades Kellogg’s to bring Stan back into their fold. Together with a team of industry experts known as “taste pilots,” they set out to create their own version of the pastry.
However, tensions escalate when Marjorie Post, head of the Post company and Edsel Kellogg’s former lover, announces their imminent product launch. Bob counters this move by securing exclusive rights to sugar worldwide, striking a deal with a Puerto Rican criminal.
As the project progresses, Bob and Stan face challenges, including pressure from the powerful dairy industry, who view their product as a threat. Bob’s concerns grow as they struggle to perfect the pastry, leading to unexpected confrontations and threats to his safety.
